Fundamental Time Blocking for Success
Summer is here! Which means longer days, the lake, ocean calling you to surf, kids are off school and vacations. How do you manage your time and have a successful Summer? We all get the same 24 hours in a day. So why are some people more productive and successful than others? They know how to manage their time.
Time Blocking is what myself and the majority of entrepreneurs I work with find a valuable tool. There is a process to determine what to time block and if time blocking is for you. Here are a few reminders on how to stick to your time blocking schedule:
1. Learn to say no.
Saying no has many implied connotations. But, you have to be realistic. You can’t take on everything and expect to be able to give each one 100% of your time. Only say “yes” to things you are passionate about and that are most important to your business success. Learn to say “no” to things that are time wasters and don’t carry as much importance to you.
2. Target to be early for everything.
Being late is a chronic problem in our society. There are many things trying to stand in your way of success. Avoid being stressed out by extenuating circumstances and be early for everything. If you think it will take only 30 minutes, time blocking for 45 minutes will give you enough “wiggle room” in the event of any delays.
3. Create firm deadlines.
That means restricting yourself to X amount of time for Y project. Set a timer. Put a clock on your desk. Know when you MUST remove yourself from that project so that you can get onto something else.
4. Remove distractions.
Don’t allow your text messages and Facebook notifications to distract you from staying on task. Put up a “do not disturb” sign at your office door, turn off your email inbox, and zone into your one task.
5. Time blocking groups similar tasks.
If you have face-to-face meetings, schedule them back to back as much as possible. This will prevent you needing to drive back and forth to your favorite meeting location. In addition, time blocking is valuable when answering emails, texts, Facebook notifications, Linkedin messages so it is done with consistency and without interruption. If you know you have to do brain-intensive work, schedule it for your most productive time of the day.
